Plain Clay Eugnorisma depuncta
(Linnaeus, 1761)
Wingspan 36-44 mm.
Despite its English name, this is an attractive, well-marked species, with black markings on a chestnut ground colour.
It is a species of deciduous woodland, occurring locally in central and eastern Scotland, becoming scarcer into northern England and Wales, and occurring sporadically in south-west England.
The moth flies from July to September, and the caterpillars, which are brownish with a paler lateral stripe, feed on various low-growing herbaceous plants such as dock (Rumex).
