Rannoch Sprawler Brachionycha nubeculosa

(Esper, 1785)

[Synonyms: Brachionycha nubeculosa]
Wingspan 48-60 mm.

Found locally in Perthshire and Inverness-shire in the Scottish highlands, unlike its relative The Sprawler, it is an early spring species, flying in March and April.

Its favoured habitat is ancient birch (Betula) woodland, where it is possible to locate the adults on the tree trunks during the day. The normal flight time is at night, when it will come to light.

The caterpillar is bright green with white speckles and yellow markings, and feeds on birch (Betula).
